Tips On Storing Dry Ice
Tips on storing dry ice – Never store dry ice in an air-tight container or freezer on its own. The carbon dioxide needs to sublimate; it can build up additional Co2 gas and burst or damage the container. Dry ice can be stored in a picnic cooler or Styrofoam container to help slow the rate of sublimation. It’s also best practice to fill the open space with some cardboard, edge-to-edge, and right on top of the dry ice to slow down the sublimation process. Newspaper or cotton towels can also be used if you don’t have any cardboard on hand.
In addition, if the cooler or container can be stored in a cool area like the garage, or outside patio, this will also help the dry ice sublimate at a slower rate since the surrounding temperature is cooler than your common room temperature at your residence or place of business. Dry ice can sublimate at approximately 5-10lbs every 24hrs within a closed insulated container. The sublimation rate can also vary depending on the quantity and the form of dry ice. A small amount of pellets will sublimate much more rapidly than a single large block. Dry ice containers should also be kept only in places with good ventilation.
